City of Kirkland looks at preliminary budget

Late in October, the Kirkland City Council saw the first draft of the 2019 budget, which they will vote on in final form in December.

There will be community meetings between now and then, so people have a chance to comment, according to an article in the Kirkland Reporter.

The new budget is $790m, and is aimed at keeping Kirkland “safe, sustainable and connected.” The budget was created with input from council members, city departments, and members of the public, according to Kurt Triplett, the city manager. Officials dealing with this type of issue might use brochure printing to create informative Booklets for residents.

Kirkland is growing, and is struggling with how to handle the increasing population, particularly with regard to its parks and transportation systems. The budget funds an emergency management coordinator, which is a full-time position; a park ranger; a signal technician; and additional staff. The budget also addresses some of the needs of the Fire Department. The capital budget makes $20m available to build Fire Station 24 in North Juanita; and has funding to help acquire property for Fire Station 27, as well as a training Facility to be developed at Fire Station 26.

Upcoming public meetings include a study session today, November 13, at 6:00 pm, and again on November 20 if a second session is necessary. Public hearings on the budget will be held November 20 at 7:30 pm.
