The first settlers of European descent in Bellevue, Washington, were Aaron Mercer and William Meydenbauer, who settled on homestead tracts in 1869. The community remained relatively undeveloped until the Lake Washington Floating Bridge opened in 1940. Once access from Seattle was simpler, Bellevue began to grow. Even so, real growth didn’t occur until the Murrow Memorial Bridge opened. Today, Bellevue has become important in its own right, and is home to the headquarters of numerous technology companies, and boasts a strong retail sector.
