Avril Lavigne was born in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, and can recall singing herself to sleep when she was a toddler. Her career kicked off in 1999, when Lavigne won a radio contest that allowed her to sing with Shania Twain in front of 20,000 people at Ottawa’s Corel Centre. She sang local gigs and recorded karaoke, and eventually attracted the attention of Arista Records, who signed her when she was 16.
She dropped her debut album, “Let Go,” on Arista in 2002. The album, which was nominated for a Grammy as “Best Pop Vocal Album,” yielded “Sk8er Boi” and “Complicated,” which led her to create a persona of a skate punk, which earned her the title “Pop-Punk Queen.” In 2004, she released “Under My Skin,” which sold ten million copies throughout the world and climbed to the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.
Her success has paved the way for more women to front pop and rock bands, and has earned her a total of 338 nominations for various awards, yielding 155 wins. A review says:
