Auburn senior center to receive money from levy

King County voters recently approved a measure to lift the lid on the Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy, which they also renewed for six years. The additional funding means that the Auburn Senior Activity Center will receive $118,000.

The center plans to use the funds to repair the kitchen floor, acquire more social service assistance, and add a system that helps hearing-impaired people hear more clearly in the TV room, classroom, and banquet room. Providers of services in facilities like this have a chance to distribute Business Cards to center visitors.

Nancy Backus, the mayor of Auburn, recently signed two contracts – one with King County to receive and use the money, and a second one with Valley Cities Behavioral Health. The healthcare company agreed to visit the center for 11 hours each week and provide services there. Auburn's administrative director, Dana Hinman, said the services began this week, and were well received by those who used them.

Other improvements to be made with the funds include buying two powerlift chairs to be placed in the classroom Auburn Respite uses weekly; to devise a contractual agreement with a social worker from Valley Cities Behavioral Health to attend the center for 10 hours per week; to provide a free twice-weekly lecture series on contemporary ethics, along with the free SAIL fall prevention program; and to advertise the free services of Hyde Shuttle.
