Auburn purchasing historic cinema

A popular cinema in downtown Auburn seems to have a bright future ahead, thanks to the city, which has agreed to buy the building.

The Auburn Avenue Theater is 93 years old, and over its history has been a dinner theater, movie theater, bus depot, and carriage house. In 2006, the city leased the theater and transformed it into a movie house with 250 seats.

Despite this, city officials have been wondering what to do with the building for years. Options include razing it to the ground and rebuilding it; rebuilding at another site; funding more repairs; extending the lease; or maintaining its purpose as a theater. Recently, the city decided to buy the cinema outright for its appraised value of $570,000, plus $80,000, which is the worth of one year of the lease; there are two left.

Daryl Faber, the director of the city's Parks, Arts, and Recreation, said the city's purchase of the building now opens it up to many different opportunities for funding. He explained that in the past, they city was able to obtain grants for specific projects, such as repairing the sound system, but large-scale capital projects were beyond hem. Now they will be able to access funding that will allow the city to truly transform the theater into a downtown arts destination, to join others like the planned Arts Alley, and the Arts and Culture Center.
