Veterans are coming together to tell their stories at an upcoming venue in Colchester.
Our vets often have trouble reintegrating into their communities after they are discharged. They may feel isolated, while those left behind have no way of understanding what the veteran has experienced. Relating their military experiences helps understanding, an effort that goes both ways.
Author Sebastian Junger started Vets Town Halls for just this purpose, to increase mutual understanding. The first town hall was held in Burlington in 2021, and the talks have continued throughout Vermont since then.
Everyone is encouraged to come and hear the talk, which is not political in nature but may provide a different perspective for those who have not served in the military. Jon Turner is hosting the event in Colchester, which emphasizes the importance of respecting one another. It also helps the veterans to remember what type of community they want to share after they leave the military. Turner is a former Marine who has worked with several communities to help them reintegrate veterans, using techniques from farming to outdoor recreation.
The Vets Town Hall in Colchester will be held November 6 at 1.00 pm at the McCarthy Arts Center. The event is open to the public and there is no charge to attend. There will be snacks provided as well. When events like these are planned, organizers can work with brochure printing to create Brochures introducing the speakers and their background.
