Colchester says goodbye to Christmas trees

The Pine Island Community Farm in Colchester is hosting a Christmas tree recycling event this weekend.

The trees gathered will feed the resident goats at the farm. Participants are asked to be sure to remove all decorations, ornaments, and garlands before dropping of the trees. Since the goats will eat the trees, it is essential that no dangerous objects are left on them.

The Pine Island Community Farm is where immigrants have the opportunity to work to help produce food as they enjoy toiling the land. The Vermont Land Trust is the owner of the farmland where gardens and other community businesses share the area and associated equipment. The land was purchased through an auction in 2012. It consists of 230 acres and is adjacent to the Winooski River.

Approximately 400 goats are raised at the farm to produce meat for the community. They are fed grain, minerals, hay, and vitamins.

The event will take place outside and physical distancing as well as face masks will be required for unvaccinated guests, and are recommended for vaccinated people.

Posters are often used to depict information specific to special events. The poster printing can include directions, sponsor recognition, facility locations, and upcoming activities. They can be mounted on walls and fences or placed on easels.

The tree donation event will take place this Saturday, January 8. The farm is located at 1029 Pine Island Road. Participation is free.
