Classical concert scheduled for Colchester

People who enjoy classical music should plan to be in Colchester in November for an upcoming concert.

The Burlington Civic Symphony Orchestra (BCSO) is coming to the Elley-Long Music Center at St. Michael’s College, where Cole Marino, their guest conductor will be on the podium. The orchestra’s fall concert comprises “Symphony No. 7 in A major” by Ludwig van Beethoven; Jean Sibelius’s “Karelia Suite,” and the overture to the opera “Semiramide” by Gioachino Rossini.

Beethoven himself conducted the premiere of his seventh symphony, which was in Vienna in December 1813. The work was an immediate success, and “Allegretto,” the second movement, was so well received the audience demanded an immediate encore.

The ”Karelia Suite” is named for the Karelia region of Finland. The piece makes use of folk melodies and is Sibelius’s homage to this area. He wrote it for students at the Helsinki University.

“Semiramide” is not a lighthearted romp like “The Barber of Seville,” arguably his most popular opera. The tragic work, which premiered in 1823, is based on legends about Queen Semiramis, which Voltaire used in his play. Singers like it for the gorgeous duets and arias it contains.

The concert is set for November 9, and the college is at 223 Ethan Allen Avenue in Colchester. People planning concerts like this may decide to work with a printer who will use brochure printing to create programs for the audience, explaining the works.
