Jennifer Gennari is the author of three Books for young readers, “My Mixed-Up Berry Blue Summer,” “Muffled,” and her latest, “Stifled.” “Muffled” features Amelia, a fifth grader with noise sensitivity who must learn an instrument. She finally settles on the trombone and makes friends with another trombonist, Madge, who is featured in the new novel.
“Stifled” follows the girls into the sixth grade, where Madge is practicing for a jazz solo and Amelia is devoted to the library. The story focuses on Madge’s conflict between her music and her friendship as the girls’ interests diverge.
At her lecture, Gennari will read passages from her book and discuss Madge’s challenges in sixth grade. She will follow that will an introduction to jazz and musical instruments. Gennari discusses her goals for writing, saying:
“My wish is for young people to love to read, to connect with stories that speak to them . . . STIFLED is for all the band kids out there, and for anyone who has struggled with changing friendships . . .”
Staff members from the Flying Pig Bookstore will be on hand with Copies of the book for sale, and Gennari will sign copies. Door prizes are also planned.
The free event is scheduled for October 20, and the library is at 898 Main Street in Colchester. Organizers can advertise events like this economically by using flyer printing to create handouts.
