The Colchester Center Voluntary Fire Company’s (CCVFC) longest-serving fire chief, Michael Chmielewski has retired. He goes out holding the record for longest time served in the position.
Chmielewski started working there as a volunteer in 1972. He started right after graduating from college and retired after being a fireman for 40 years, and the fire chief for 30 years. The CCVFC said goodbye to its longest-serving chief with a retirement party that was attended by town officials, friends and fellow firefighters. The speakers at the party all stated that Chmielewski was an advocate for progress who will be missed sorely. The former chief was likely to have received several personal and Corporate Gifts from fire chiefs from other departments. At the retirement party, Bob Young, who is the former Chief of Malletts Bay Fire Department, highlighted Chmielewski’s positive attitude and humility by stating that:
“He doesn’t want to be here. He’s here for us. I’m a better person today because of what I’ve learned from him. Thank you very much for your service, I love you like a brother.”
The position of CCVFC’s chief will be taken over by Sandy Ladd, who served as Assistant Chief under Chmielewski’s
