Traditional music event returns to Brattleboro

A popular musical event is coming back to Brattleboro.

This year is the 18th Northern Roots Festival, a favorite showcase that is always popular because it embraces the variety of traditions found in northern music including Scandinavian, the Shetland Islands, French Canadian, English, Scottish, Irish, and more. This year, each day of the three-day celebration highlights a different tradition.

The event kicks off with a French-Canadian Soirée, a new concert. The performers are guitarist Yann Falquet, fiddler Pascal Gemme, pianist Rachel Aucoin, and accordionist Sabin Jacques.

The second day will be filled with sessions and workshops, followed by a concert that evening featuring all the traditions played during the day.

The final day brings the Pub Sing, as well as an Irish Session, and a French Canadian Session, all of which are open to both listeners and players who want to sit in.

Roots music is described as a musical genre inspired by Indigenous or traditional music, especially those of Latin American, European, and African American cultures. Roots music has an earthy, raw sound, and began to emerge in the 1960s and 1970s, when rock and folk musicians started adding gospel, country, and blues touches to their work.

The Northern Roots Festival is scheduled for January 24, 25, and 26, at the Brattleboro Music Center. When they plan events like this, organizers will often have a professional use brochure printing techniques to create a program, as audiences are often interested in learning more about the performers.
