Artemis comprises women, each of whom is a master jazz musician with a solid solo career. They are multinational as well as multigenerational, and come from Japan, Canada, and the United States. The original lineup has changed slightly, and the current members are Renee Rosnes, Allison Miller, Noriko Ueda, Nicole Glover, and Ingrid Jensen.
The group assembled in 2017 at the request of Rosnes, who had been invited to participate in a festival tour in Europe. Rosnes says she chose musicians she respected and wanted to play with, and once that initial tour was over, she recognized the group had exceptional chemistry. The musicians decided to stay together and see what could develop.
Although Artemis has only been performing for a few years, they have already been featured on “Jazz Night in America” on NPR, and in “Vanity Fair.” They have been seen on some of the most important stages in the United States including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Carnegie Hall. A review says the group’s members:
“. . . move gracefully through various styles and moods to sound, by turns, authoritative and playful, locked-in or loose-limbed.”
Artemis will be at the Vermont Jazz Center on May 18. Organizers of events like this will often use poster printing to create advertising for them.
