An interesting venture into Indian music is scheduled for Brattleboro.
Trina Basu and her husband Arun Ramamurthy have partnered with Next Stage Arts to discuss and perform classical Indian music at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center next month.
Basu, who is from Miami, learned Western classic music as she grew up. Later, she studied jazz, and then went to India to study Carnatic classical music. Her unique journey as a violinist was influenced by being is a mixed-race woman growing up with both North American and South Asian heritages, as well as her experiences with musicians playing in many different disciplines. She has appeared at venues from Carnegie Hall to the Newport Jazz Festival, and appeared with such artists as Dr. Mysore Manjunath and Mos Def.
Ramamurthy, who calls Brooklyn, New York, his home base, is an organizer, educator, and violinist. His music is based on training for his entire life in South Indian Carnatic music, but he has also incorporated the influences he heard in New Jersey, where he grew up. He has studied with three celebrated violinists—brothers Sri Mysore Nagaraj and Dr. Mysore Manjunath, and Sri. Ananthakrishnan. He also studied with violinist Jim Mate, learning Western classical music. He has performed at the Kennedy Center, Pioneer Works, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
