Folk-rock band comes to Brattleboro

A Philadelphia folk-rock band will be bringing their energy to Brattleboro next month.

Slaughter Beach, Dog, is the brainchild of Jake Ewald, who founded the group in 2014. At the time, he was a member of Modern Baseball, an emo band that hand released three albums, “Sports” in 2012, “You’re Gonna Miss It All” in 2014, and “Holy Ghost” in 2016. In 2017 they announced they were taking a break.

When the hiatus became permanent, Ewald formed the current group. Ewald handles vocals and the guitar, with Ian Farmer, who was also in Modern Baseball, on bass. The band is completed with Nick Harris on guitar and Zack Robbins on drums. The line-up has evolved since the founding, and critics note the music has changed as well, from angst-ridden college rock to an exploration of moving into a more mature phase of life in one’s late 20s and early 30s. A review of a live performance notes:

“ . . . I feel the joy coming out of all of us like we’re radioactive. If you’d bottled that air, I promise you’d bottle happiness.”

Whitmer Thomas is also performing. This musician, comedian, and actor based in Los Angeles and is best known for his work with the Power Violence comedy troupe, as well as his involvement with “Stone Quackers,” an animated comedy. When events like these are set up, organizers can use brochure printing to create programs.

Slaughter Beach, Dog, and Whitmer Thomas will be at The Stone Church on January 25.
