Early history
One of the earliest developments in the area was a stockade and blockhouse that became known as Fort Drummer. The fort was built in 1724 to protect Massachusetts Bay colonists during Drummer's War. The next year the war ended, and the fort became a trading post. Sporadic conflict broke out in the area culminating in King George's War, when a small garrison of British troops were stationed at the fort. After 1750, this protective measure was no longer necessary.
With the end of hostilities, the community developed rapidly. The first store to operate in Vermont was opened in Brattleboro in 1771, and a post office was set up in 1784. Various industries began to appear in the community, particularly mills, which were powered by the Whetstone Falls. Factories lined the banks of the river to take advantage of its power.
The history of the community is maintained by the Brattleboro Historical Society, which has a collection of photos, documents, and historical artifacts. It also operates a museum. Organizations like this often benefit by using catalog printing to create a record of their holdings.
