Herndon to witness construction of new data center

Herndon residents will soon see construction begin on an artificial intelligence (AI) facility in town.

Menlo Digital announced construction of its MD-DC1 data center, a new 48 MW (megawatts) technology platform in Herndon. The two-story facility will consist of about 307,000 square feet and is part of the company’s development project across Northern Virginia, eventually delivering over 1.8 GW (gigawatts) of power to area residents and businesses. Virginia is a hub for data centers, and the company also has either operational or construction projects in Dallas, Chicago, Phoenix, and Silicon Valley.

The Herndon complex will have four 12 MW data halls, backed by 67 MW of utility power from Dominion Energy’s Lincoln Park Substation. The company hopes to have the powered shell delivered by Summer 2026. Herndon’s center is only one of 54 within the state. Banner printing often announces important opening dates.

Jane Vaughan, Chief Development Officer for Menlo Digital, further placed the Herndon facility in context, saying:

"Breaking ground in Herndon represents more than a single project milestone—it's part of a broader expansion strategy across the country."
