The Old Town district of Alexandria, covering about 16 city blocks on and around the waterfront, is currently undergoing renovation and seeing new buildings and development.
One of the projects is being undertaken by EYA, a developer, to replace one of two newsprint warehouse sites was used by the Washington Post with retail and housing space. There will be 10,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor; 70 apartment-style condominiums between 1,300 and 3,500 square feet in size with views of the water; and 26 upscale townhouses between 2,000 and 2,800 square feet each.
South of Fitzgerald’s Warehouse, a boutique hotel, the Indigo, is currently being built and groundbreaking is planned for the near future next door for a condominium and townhouse complex.
Also in the works are a flood control system, which will cost $33 million, and a two-level walkway, 1,700 feet long that will embrace the shoreline. These two projects are expected to provide visitors and residents recreation space as well as reduce flooding. Olin Studios will create a landscape plan for the area to unify the waterfront.
According to the planning director for the city, Karl W. Moritz, these new developments will improve the city from both economic and infrastructure standpoints. His department might benefit from the assistance of various printing services to provide more information to residents about the many advantages of these new projects.
