Traditional homes and garden event returns

The 89th Annual Old Town Alexandria Historic Homes & Garden Tour has been scheduled for this month.

The self-guided tours will feature admittance to five private homes and gardens. One Old Town residence and garden on the tour will be 515 South Fairfax Street. After demolishing the two tenements and the oyster processing plant, the house and garden was bought in 2019 and refurbished. A restored carriage house at 508 South Fairfax was a horse stable at one time. Its garden is replete with hornbeams, clematis-draped pergola, and flowered brick walkways. Other private homes and gardens will be a townhouse (206 Duke Steet), a carpentry-shop-turned-house (323 Duke Street), and the house of the town’s first female mayor (512 Prince Street).

Tour guests may also take strolls through six historic public properties: Mount Vernon, Gunston Hall (10709 Gunston Road, Mason Neck), River Farm (7931 E Boulevard Drive), Lee-Fendall House (614 Oronoco Street), Green Springs Gardens (12000 Government Center Parkway), and Carlyle House (121 N. Fairfax Street).

Old Presbyterian Meeting House (321 S. Fairfax) will offer complimentary refreshments.

Advanced tickets are available online for $55 and event-day tickets will be available for $65 at the Alexandria Visitor Center (221 King Street). Although no photography is allowed at most of these locations, local Stationery printers offer notecards with professional-quality prints.

The tour will be Saturday, April 23 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
