Potomac watershed to be protected by clean-up

The Potomac Riverkeeper Network will be holding a river cleanup early next month. Residents from Alexandria are asked to volunteer to help protect the city’s waterfront.

The Stand-Up Paddle Cleanup will be held at the Belle Haven Marina. Volunteers are welcome to bring their own boat, or rent a vessel from the marina. Attendees may also work by the river’s edge along the trail on foot. The Potomac Riverkeeper Network will provide trash pickers, gloves, and garbage Bags for the event.

Garbage ends up in the Potomac River due to a variety of sources, including stormwater runoff, overuse of plastics and illegal dumping. As the river flows, the community’s litter ends up in the Chesapeake Bay before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. The trash has negative impacts on the environment, Alexandria’s wildlife, and its residents.

The Potomac Riverkeeper Network organizes multiple clean-ups throughout the year as part of the organizations efforts to protect the environment. Additional efforts may include using printing services to produce Brochures and Signs, thus educating the public about recycling and proper garbage disposal. Residents may also use the network’s Water Reporter app to report areas along the river that require maintenance.

Boat rentals should be registered before the clean-up by contacting the marina at (703) 768-0018. A water safety waiver must be completed in advance. There is also a $6 boat launching fee at the marina, applicable to all vessels.

The Stand-Up Paddle Cleanup will be held on Saturday, July 3 from 9:00 to 11:30 AM, at the Belle Haven Marina, located along the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Tickets to volunteer are free, but registration in advance on the Eventbrite website is required.
