Mt. Vernon by Candlelight lures Alexandria residents into the past

A popular historic location is offering a unique guided tour this holiday season.

Mount Vernon, the home of George and Martha Washington, is planning to give visitors that arrive after dark on select dates this December a special view of the mansion. The candlelit tours will allow people to experience the home in the way it would have looked to those that visited the Washington family.

These special evenings will consist of a guided tour of the first two floors of the home led by guides dressed in period-appropriate attire. In addition to the tour, all guests are invited to take part in caroling by the fireside and dancing as well as visit the additional buildings on site including the greenhouse and slave quarters. Young visitors will especially enjoy the opportunity to visit with Aladdin the Christmas camel, and the cookies and warm cider included with the tour.

A reproduction of Martha's Great Cake, a confection the former first lady traditionally served on Epiphany, will be on display. Lucky guests may even have the chance to add one more recipe to their collection before running off to the Print company to create holiday recipe Books for friends and family.

The event takes place at 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway in Mount Vernon today, as well as December 8, 9, and 17, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The cost of admission is $24 for adults and $16 for children ages 11 and under. A limited amount of spaces is available, so early purchase is recommended.
