Mount Vernon event takes 18th-Century theme

George Washington's Mount Vernon estate will be holding its annual Summer Huzzah in early June.

Alexandria guests will be treated to an evening of 18th-Century era food and fun with tavern games like tic-tac-toe, shut the box, and tops. Lawn games will include Graces, and 18th-Century tunes will be presented by Colonial Faire from 6:00 pm, and again at 7:00 pm. Tours inside the mansion will be available, and many of the rooms will be closed for preservation work after this event.

Stationery printers often use pictures taken in mansions like this on notecard sets.

Some skills will be demonstrated, such as ice-cream making during George Washington's time with unusual flavors like garlic, pickle, and oyster. Mount Vernon's Historic Trades Team will be demonstrating beer-making and whiskey distilling. Horse-drawn wagon riders across a 12-acre field will be available. The Livestock Team will show their ponies and discuss 18th-Century livestock roles, while the Mount Vernon Inn will be selling concessions.

The event will close with a Washington Tattoo, a one-hour performance of dance, marches, and music through cultural and educational programming by both civilian and military personnel. The performance will run from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a Washington Tattoo meet-and-greet afterwards from 9:00 pm to 9:30 pm.

The public event will run from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm for general admission ticket holders on Saturday, June 8 at 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway. Guests may bring their own chairs and blankets to sit on the lawn.
