What's Happening in Alexandria, VA…

Festival offers music and educational opportunities

The 8th Mike Seeger Commemorative Old Time Banjo Festival is taking place this July in Alexandria.

The festival will consist of a concert followed by a full day of workshops. Among those slated to appear at the concert are Tony Trischka, Marcy Marxer, Rick Good, and Cathy Fink. Several of the performers will also be teaching the workshops. The emphasis is on the Appalachian styles of banjo playing and topics will include old-time finger picking and old time fiddle.

Workshops cost $40 each and will either be held at the Electric Maid in Washington, D. C. or in House of Musical Traditions' (HMT) lesson studio in Takoma Park, Maryland. Those interested must register in advance either by telephone or online at the HMT website.

This festival should attract a lot of those in Alexandria who are fans of traditional banjo music or want to increase their skills. No doubt organizers have been spreading the word to the community with products such as flyers and posters obtained from local printing companies.

The Mike Seeger Commemorative Old Time Banjo Festival will run from July 12 to 13. The concert will be held at the Birchmere on July 12 beginning at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $39.10 each, including taxes. To find out more about the performers, or to register for workshops, call 301-270-9090.
