Educational family carnival planned in Alexandria

The organizers of the ASTEAM Fall Family Carnival coming up this month hope to engage children in the fields of mathematics, aviation, and much more.

Through the ASTEAM (Aviation, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) carnival, the Northern Virginia Urban League presents educational lessons in an appealing manner. The carnival is meant to encourage local youth to want to learn more about the importance of these industries. To do so, the organizers have arranged activities for the event like drone racing, creative art, robotics, and Lego engineering. Children can create their own designs or use the guidance of the instructors. The participants are free to experiment with everything from robots to graphic design.

The Northern Virginia Urban League is a nonprofit organization that works to encourage minority students to enter fields that they may otherwise feel unable to compete in. The group began in 1910 and is the largest and oldest organization of its kind in the country. They aid more than 2 million people each year through programs like the carnival as well as through services that aid elderly and low-income residents of the areas they cover.

The ASTEAM Fall Family Carnival is free and open to everyone. All the events are for children in grades K-12. It will take place on September 22 from noon to 4:00 pm at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, located at 901 Wythe Street in Alexandria. The organizers request that everyone preregister on the Eventbrite website.
