Alexandria works on long-term school plans

The expectations for new buildings and the need for any high schools and pre-kindergarten centers in Alexandria are currently being worked on as part of the Long Range Educational Facilities Plan of the Alexandria City Public Schools.

Recently, the School Board was presented a draft by the facilities staff of the Alexandria City Public Schools, detailing the High School and Pre-K Center Educational Specifications.

These have been aligned with the characteristics of high-performing schools in the district, as well as its strategic plan for 2020. Involvement of the community, creation of learning environments that meet the standards for best practice, and academic excellence are the focus of the specifications.

The plans for the Pre-K Center include multi-purpose rooms, 20 classrooms, easily accessible playgrounds, and community playground space that will accommodate between 320 and 400 students.

The High School will have an ideal capacity of 1,600 students in grades 9 through 12, and a usable range of 1,400 to 1,800 students. The curriculum model will be a “school within a school” so that students can follow specific programs in the educational setting.

The City Council, the Alexandria City School Board, and community groups are working collaboratively on this phase of the Long Range Educational Facilities Plan. Various printing services may be used in creating the plan so that all those involved have the same documentation.
