Alexandria residents can head back to the 18th Century

Everyone is welcome to discover the beauty and magic of the ballroom experience in 1700s England this month.

The Jane Austen Ball will be an evening of period-appropriate dress, dancing, and music. The City Tavern’s Ballroom at Gadsby's Tavern Museum will provide a historic backdrop for the affair. Period costume is suggested, but cocktail attire is also accepted. Traditional English dances will be performed for the ball.

Gadsby's Tavern Museum is a 18th-Century hotel where many historical figures once visited. Overnight guests have included Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and John Adams. George Washington also once visited the hotel to attend a special ball held in his honor.

The museum is offering three classes to help guests prepare for the ball and the schedule for the dance classes is available on its website. The cost of attending a single class is $12, or participants can choose all three for $30.

When celebrating special occasions or holidays with vintage parties, small touches like era-appropriate Invitations and thank you notes can help to give the evening an authentic feel. Printing companies can design retro personalized Stationery or Holiday Cards for the occasion.

Admission to the Jane Austen Ball is by reserved ticket only. Tickets are $45 each and are available from the Alexandria municipal website. Gadsby's Tavern is located at 134 N. Royal Street in Alexandria and the ball will take place on September 27 from 8:00 to 11:00 pm.
