Volunteers welcomed for Cottonwood Heights training program
Residents of Cottonwood Heights have the opportunity to make a difference in their hometown by training to become part of the local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
The CERT program provides fundamental education for volunteers across the US to prepare them for disasters. Instruction in fire safety, organization of teams, medical operations and basic search and rescue skills are provided. It also gives participants knowledge of the kinds of catastrophes and hazards that could occur in their communities and how to respond.
The program operates under the wing of the National CERT Association (NCA), created by program leaders in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The creation of the national committee in 2019 increased communication and the sharing of resources through 10 regions across the country.
The CERT basic training in Cottonwood Heights is presented on evenings over eight weeks and is followed by a half-day, hands-on exercise. Prior to the training sessions, anyone interested in participating must take up to eight hours of online education to familiarize themselves with the program.
The CERT Basic Training Course starts January 30, and will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9 pm. Registration and further information is available online. Groups and organizations that offer courses such as this often rely on flyer printing to boost their advertising.
