Movie make-up artist helps Cottonwood Heights prep for Halloween

Monsters, ghouls and goblins can look convincing for Halloween by taking a makeup instruction class next month in Cottonwood Heights.

The Special Effects Makeup Workshop will be presented by the Cottonwood Heights Arts Council and will be taught by emerging film makeup artist Aspen Raine. Raine owns a Salt Lake City special effects makeup company and has worked on commercials, short and feature films.

Workshop participants will receive hands-on instruction on how to create realistic makeup to transform themselves to match spooky costumes.

Students will discover how to create zombie-like appearances, the techniques used for fake burns, scars, bruises and other wounds, as well as application tips such as air brushing and skin tones. The history of the art of special effects as well as safety in using special effects products will also be discussed. There will be a fun spooky photo booth available for photos of the finished creations.

The workshop is open to those ages 14 and older and the $20 fee includes all the necessary supplies. Participants are encouraged to wear clothes they don’t mind getting dirty.

Organizers of special workshops such as this often use flyer printing to spread the word about their classes.

The Special Effects Makeup Workshop will be held October 10, 2025, from 6:30 to 9 pm at Cottonwood Heights City Hall, 2277 E Bengal Blvd.
