The first new moon of the lunar calendar will be recognized in a special celebration in Cottonwood Heights.
Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, has long been celebrated and is among the most important Chinese holidays, as it marks the first day of the New Year.
There are a number of customs and myths linked to Chinese New Year. The festival honors ancestors and is a time for families to gather for a meal after cleaning their homes to rid the house of bad luck and open it to good fortune.
Red paper decorations are displayed that relate to new beginnings, good luck, fortune, happiness and longevity. Giving money in red Envelopes is also part of the tradition, as is the lighting of firecrackers.
Presented by the Cottonwood Arts Council and the Asian Arts and Culture Association, Lunar New Year will include dance, music and a tai chi demonstration to welcome the Year of the Horse. It will be a free family event. Children will have the opportunity to take part in crafts that focus on the traditional themes of the festival. There will also be an art exhibit that depicts Asian heritage and culture.
Groups that present community events such as this often require printing services to create advertising materials.
The Lunar New Year Celebration will be held Saturday, February 7 from 10:00 am to noon at Cottonwood Heights City Hall on East Bengal Boulevard.
