Sandy city leaders kick start new facility

Officials in Sandy, about five miles from Cottonwood Heights, recently broke ground on an enormous mixed-use development that will be located in the city's downtown.

The project, known as ‘The Cairns’, will stretch for blocks, cover about 1,100 acres, and provide 20 million square feet of space for offices, retailers, and residents.

One of the most intriguing parts of the project is a 25-story residential skyscraper known as ‘The Prestige’, which is slated for completion in 2016. This high-rise will address several facts: first, that Sandy has run out of room to build single-family homes; and second, that a high-rise has an urban “feel” that appeals to younger people, who are moving back to downtown areas throughout the country.

Sandy's mayor, Tom Dolan, says the idea of The Cairns is to create an urban area in a suburb, to entice people to move to the city. He goes on to say that Sandy needs to increase its population to increase its tax base, and to bring vitality to the city. He also believes the project will attract jobs, and building office and residential space in the same development means people can work, play, and live close to their work.

The development of ‘The Cairns’ will create jobs for residents of the area, including jobseekers from Cottonwood Heights. Companies moving to Sandy could work with business card printers to create appropriate cards for new employees.
