Salt Lake City holds second Slide the City event

Thousands of people turned out to slip and slide through downtown Salt Lake City last month.

The ‘Slide the City’ event was held on August 22, and more than 3,000 people took part. This is the second year for the fun event.

Slide the City set up a 1,000-foot water slide on Main Street, and invited people to go for it. Most went down the slide on their stomachs, but some chose to try the slide on their backs. A few even shot selfies or put GoPro cameras on their heads to film themselves as they splashed down the street.

Cottonwood Heights resident Langi Sofele said the event was worth the money. She brought about 20 people, including her children, grandchildren, nephews, and nieces, making about 20 people in all. She enjoyed the slide because it is unique and happens infrequently. In addition, anything that keeps the family active and together is “awesome”, according to Sofele's niece Leima Moala.

Sofele said the family had been to a wedding earlier, then put on their swimsuits to do the water slide. She added they still intended to go to the wedding reception that evening.

City officials might built on the success of this year's event by working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, including photos of the slide and reminding them to look out for next year's event.
