Planning far ahead in Cottonwood Heights

After canceling many events this year, Cottonwood Heights is making up for it by getting ready for one of the city's favorite activities – the community musical.

The show chosen for 2021 is “Matilda,” and auditions have been scheduled. This production was originated by the Royal Shakespeare Company and is based on Roald Dahl's book about a prodigious schoolgirl, which was published in 1988. Since then it has sold more than 17 million copies worldwide.

The book has been adapted for both film and the stage, and the theatrical production has won over 90 international awards. Like many characters in Dahl's works, the adults are mean-spirited but powerful, or indifferent, forcing a child to confront and overcome their schemes and prejudices. In this case, Matilda uses her extraordinary intelligence and kinetic powers to do the right thing.

Those who plan to audition are encouraged to sign up online, though this is not required. However, people who have signed up will be seen first. Prospective cast members should bring a resume, photo, and be ready to perform between 16 and 32 bars of a show tune, similar to those in “Matilda.” Complete details can be found on the city's website.

Auditions will be held in March 2021, with exact dates still to be announced. Flyer printing can be used to create informational handouts for participants in events like this.
