New information hub opens its doors

The new visitors’ center at Great Salt Lake Marina, about 15 miles from Cottonwood Heights, opened its doors for the first time on Friday, June 13.

The center gives visitors information about the Great Salt Lake, videos of its history, and even souvenirs. People can sit on the outside deck and eat at picnic tables while they watch the lake. Beach access is available from the deck as well.

The center is the first building of its type to open at the lake, and officials of the Great Salt Lake State Park expect more than a quarter-million people to come through the center annually. Jeremy Shaw, the park manager, said the new site makes it easy for people to come and enjoy themselves.

Speaking to Fox Salt Lake City, John and Wendy Cifelli of Bolivia, North Carolina, were clearly impressed with what they found and said that, for an opening day, the center was well organized and the operation seemed to be well established. The Cifellis also said they enjoyed learning about the lake and found souvenirs to take home.

Shaw said he hoped the new center would attract locals as well as tourists. He noted that many people who live in the area have never been to the lake, and that this was something he would like to see change.

Park officials could work with a banner printing company to create colorful flags to celebrate the opening.
