Owners and patients of the Olympus Clinic in the Holladay Village Center, about 4.5 miles from Cottonwood Heights, attended a council meeting last month to discuss the future of the facility.
The 60-year-old clinic is a medical outlet that provides primary care. When the clinic sought permission to build a much larger office in order to serve patients more efficiently, they found that current zoning regulations require their ground floor space to be used for retail purposes only.
The owners of the property on which the clinic stands contacted the city staff and worked with members of the planning commission to leave the future of the clinic undecided until zoning amendments could be considered. Paul Allred, Holladay’s Community Development Director, noted that different parts of the center require different amounts of space to be designated for retail.
Dr. Jared Probst said he and others at the clinic were surprised when, after designing a beautiful new building, they were told that their entire ground floor would have to be a retail space. Probst argued the clinic is a medical facility that needs to provide patients with easy access to ground floor offices.
The city finally made several amendments to the shopping center that excluded the Olympus Clinic from the retail requirements.
The clinic couldwork with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for patients to let them know its current status.
