The first Jersey Mike's to open in Utah has chosen Cottonwood Heights as its location.
The restaurant opened at 6985 South Park Centre on July 15. Fred Downey and Steve Leonard own the franchise, with Shayla McKinney and Nick Calderon as their operating partners.
The quartet held a grand opening fundraiser that ran from opening day until July 19, featuring free subs. Funds raised at the event were slated for Project Airtime, a Draper, Utah, nonprofit organization that takes everyone flying, including people in wheelchairs, and those with spinal cord and brain injuries.
The franchisees circulated 10,000 coupons throughout the area, offering to give a regular sub to anyone who contributed $2 to the Project Airtime organization. Steve Leonard knows Chris Santacroce, who founded Airtime. Santacroce had an accident that resulted in a spinal injury, but beat the odds and made a complete recovery. He now focuses on helping others who were not as fortunate.
Jersey Mike's was founded in 1956, and now operates 1,500 locations around the country. Known for subs with fresh meats and vegetables, and it is heavily involved in the communities it serves. To date, its various stores have raised almost $13m to aid charities in their local areas.
The new store could work with a banner printing company to create festive streamers to celebrate the opening.
