The city of Cottonwood Heights is planning to take over a larger share of public works during a transition period that will run through the summer, starting July 1 and continuing through September 30.
By October 1, Cottonwood Heights will be providing all the public works services, including street maintenance, landscaping, paving, and snow clearance.
Cottonwood Heights has been using Terracare, a private company, to provide snow removal and similar services since 2013. Although the city has a good relationship with Terracare and says there are no penalties of any sort involved in ending the contract, officials feel they can “be more responsive” if the city handles these services itself.
Currently, the city spends about $1.5m per year on its contract with Terracare. In addition, it spends approximately the same for the services it already provides. When Cottonwood Heights wraps up its contract, its new budget of approximately $2.9m is expected to cover all the expenses associated with providing the various services, including buying new snowplows.
The city council is considering conducting a citywide survey to learn how satisfied residents are with the services the city provides. The last time it took such a measurement was in 2009.
City officials could work with a flyer printing company on a mailer to remind residents that their input is needed when the survey is distributed.
