It will soon be time for one of Cottonwood Heights' favorite events.
Although it is still summer, plans are in place for the traditional Thanksgiving 5K run, the “longest-running” holiday race in the state, now going into its 35th year. People who are interested in taking part in the event should not wait too long to register, as the race will be limited to 2,000 participants.
The 3.14-mile course starts near the south entrance to the city's Recreation Center and makes a large loop to end close to the intersection of Claret Street and Enchanted Hills Circle. There will be awards for the first-, second-, and third-place finishers in each age division, plus awards for the top three finishers overall, in both the Men's and Women's divisions. All runners will be able to draw for prizes as well.
On the course itself, strollers will be allowed, as will leashed dogs. However, participants taking part with the children or furry friends accompanying them are asked to go to the back of the starting field.
After the race, refreshments and awards will be available in the gym, with the awards ceremony beginning at about 9.45 am. Finally, those who are able to “Beat the Mayor” will be given a special commemorative medal.
Thanksgiving this year is on November 28, and so is the race, which begins at 9:00 am. Banner printing is often used to create course markers for outdoor events such as this.
