Cottonwood Heights mayoral candidate goes to the dogs

A Cottonwood Heights resident named CeCe is running for mayor of Salt Lake County. This might not seem unusual in an election year, except that CeCe is a dog; a “mini golden doodle” (half golden retriever, half toy poodle). She hopes to be the winner of the first ever Canine Mayoral Election held in the county.

Ben McAdams, the mayor of Salt Lake County, along with Salt Lake County Animal Services, announced the election, which is being held as a fundraiser. It costs one dollar per vote for residents to cast their ballots, and the monies raised go to benefit the Injured Animal Fund, which helps to care of wounded and sick animals.

The winner, who will be designated the ‘Canine Mayor’, will have a two-year term, and will be required to attend events along with Mayor McAdams, if his office determines the dog's presence is necessary. The Canine Mayor will be expected to be an example of a law-abiding animal, who will uphold regulations, keep vaccines and animal licenses up-to-date, and encourage people to be responsible pet owners.

CeCe is the only Cottonwood Heights resident in the contest, which is now open. Voting began October 1 and runs through the 21. The winner will be named on October 27.

The mayor's office might work with a flyer printing company to create handouts urging people to vote.
