Cottonwood Heights gears up for 5K run/walk

Cottonwood Heights is getting ready for its annual Butlerville Days party, which gets going later today.

This will be the 10th such celebration, and the main event is a 5K run/walk. Registration has been open since June 20, and adults who registered before July 18 paid $25, while children aged 11 and younger paid $20. All registrants received a T-shirt as well.

The name ‘Butlerville Days’ comes from the six Butler brothers, who were some of the earliest settlers to the area. Legend says there was also a McGhie family of four brothers who arrived at about the same time. At a meeting to organize their town, there were more Butlers than McGhies, and so the town was unofficially called ‘Butler’. Later on, however, Salt Lake County began referring to it as Cottonwood Heights.

This year's Butlerville Days celebration starts this evening, with the showing of a film in the park. Tomorrow, July 24, the first-ever Butlerville Days 5K run/walk kicks off at 7:00 am. It will start and finish at the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center. A parade follows at 3:00 pm, with plenty of food and rides available all day. A fireworks display rounds things off in the evening.

Celebration organizers could work with a banner printing company to create eye-catching flags to display at the event.
