In an effort to show a sixth-grader recently diagnosed with leukemia that they care, students at Canyon View Elementary recently tied thousands of lime green ribbons to a fence.
In January, Ashtyn Poulsen, who studies at Canyon View Elementary in Cottonwood Heights, came down with what she and her family thought was the flu. When her symptoms did not resolve after an extended period of time, her mother grew concerned. Visits to the doctor confirmed that Ashtyn has undifferentiated leukemia.
Each ribbon on the display is meant to show Ashtyn that she has many people who care about her and support her. The students have dubbed themselves ‘Ashtyn's Army’ in a display of goodwill. The goal of tying ribbons on the fence is not only to let Ashtyn know that she is in their thoughts, but also to highlight Ashtyn's fight against illness to passersby in the street, according to her aunt, Kristi Hanson. Cottonwood Heights printing companies could produce a flyer to explain the ribbons on the fence to those who see it.
The fence also features Ashtyn's name and the lime green color was chosen because it is Ashtyn's favorite.
Ashtyn is currently recovering after receiving her first round of chemotherapy. She has missed a lot of school and will continue to miss school. Although she is happy to know that she has the support of her classmates, she was hesitant to talk to them over Skype on a recent evening. She stated that she was afraid seeing her friends would make her cry.
