Cottonwood Heights considers revitalization

City planners in Cottonwood Heights are considering a new zoning classification to help foster development in the Fort Union area, following a January 14 presentation.

The Community and Economic Development Department (CEDD) is going to create a new Planned District Development (PDD) classification. It is hoped that the new zoning will spur revitalization in some areas of Cottonwood Heights, particularly near a gravel pit and along Fort Union.

Brian Berndt, CEDD's director, said that when the city was incorporated ten years ago, the general plan always called for the Fort Union corridor to be a walkable, vibrant street. Within the new district, the city hopes to encourage mixed-use developments, innovative architectural designs, and amenities that serve both the city and the specific project itself. Planners would also like to see spaces oriented for pedestrian use.

More specifically, planners want to develop the area to encourage employment there, as well as facilities for shopping, cultural activities, entertainment, healthcare, recreation, and community centers. They also want it accessible by public transportation, and would like to see work and living spaces integrated so that people can live within walking distance of their jobs.

The plan is available on the city's website, but officials might consider working with a postcard printer to create a card for Mailing to residents, informing them of the plans and encouraging them to become involved in the process and submit comments.
