Cottonwood Heights considers draft of walking and cycling plan

Cottonwood Heights city planners and residents have been working to create a master plan for trail and bike lanes in the city, which was recently presented to the city council for preliminary discussion.

The plan is designed to help create a functional network of bike lanes and trails throughout Cottonwood Heights. It also should increase opportunities for recreation, and make it safer for everyone in the community, no matter what type of transportation they use. Ultimately, the plan would promote the development of a balanced transportation system for the community.

Other goals of the plan include promoting healthier living by encouraging people to use bicycles or walk to get around the city, encouraging people in the area to think of Cottonwood Heights as a destination for outdoor recreational activities, and focusing on developing bike lanes and pedestrian trails to encourage economic development.

Additional plan objectives include gaining recognition of Cottonwood Heights as a bike-friendly city, and creating a safe system for bicyclists with lanes that are interconnected. Bicycle trails will be classified according to usage, and nature and urban trails are also considered and suggestions made for improvements.

The draft is currently being reworked and will be presented to the city council again in final form some time this month. Plan supporters could create illustrated Brochures for residents, explaining the plan and appealing for their support.
