Comic-Con back with a bang

Salt Lake is putting on its second Comic-Con, and organizers and fans are sure to be looking forward to the fun.

Comic-Con began more than 40 years ago, the brainchild of comic book fan Shel Dorf, who organized Triple Fan Fairs in Detroit in the 1960s. Dorf moved to San Diego in 1970 and staged a one-day event called the Golden State Comic-Minicon, and Comic-Con evolved from there to an international organization.

One of the organizers, Dan Farr, has hinted that people have reason to be excited. A red carpet event will kick things off, with money going to Millie’s Princess Foundation. There are more than 200 guests scheduled, including stars of television and movies, and famous artists from the comic book industry.

Among the biggest names are comic book legend Stan Lee, who is the co-creator of a number of popular characters including Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, and the X-Men. Lee is also a past president and chairman of Marvel Comics. Other guests include actors like Stephen Amell, star of the TV series The Arrow. Film star Danny Glover and comic book artist Neal Adams, who reimagined Batman into the darker character he is today, will also be present.

Comic-Con is scheduled for September 4, 5, and 6 at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Convention organizers could work with a banner printing company to create a piece for the entrance, and entice people from nearby areas like Cottonwood Heights.
