Citizens Academy returns to Cottonwood Heights

The Cottonwood Heights Police Department is once again offering its Citizens Academy, an annual course for residents interested in learning more about how policing is done in the community.

These types of academies are becoming more common in municipalities throughout the country, as law enforcement officials reach out to residents to bridge the divide that can sometimes occur between police and those they are sworn to protect. The sessions give residents a look at police activity from the other side of the badge. Organizers of courses like this can use Flyers or brochure printing to create informative course materials for attendees.

Citizens academies' exact content varies from place to place, but most include information on such topics as understanding the law, procedures for traffic stops, and K9 units, among others. Academies typically feature both classroom lectures and practical demonstrations, and some jurisdictions allow students to ride along on a patrol. Certificates are typically awarded to graduates.

Courses of this type are very popular, so people who are interested are urged to register early. They must be 18 years of age at a minimum and pass a background check. Those who would like more information are invited to contact Liz Jones at ljones@ch.utah.gov.

The academy begins late in February and runs for a total of ten weeks, meeting every Wednesday from 6.30 pm until 9 pm. The course will finish early in May.
