Chinese New Year to be celebrated in Cottonwood Heights

Families in Cottonwood Heights are invited to enjoy a special cultural event that commemorates the lunar new year.

Presented by the Cottonwoods Arts Council and its partner, the Asian Arts and Culture Association, the Chinese New Year will be celebrated through martial arts including kung fu and tai chi, as well as customary music and dance performances. A limited number of hands-on children’s traditional crafts will also be offered.

In addition, the Asian theme will extend to the arts council’s artist of the month exhibit, which visitors will be able to view at the same time.

More than 40 works by local students, as well as representatives of the China Academy of Art, will be displayed, including paintings and calligraphy.

Recognizing the end of winter and the start of spring on the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year is one of the most important cultural holidays and is celebrated in many places around the world. It starts on the first new moon that appears after January 21, and continues through the Lantern Festival, 15 days later.

Groups that plan celebrations to mark cultural customs such as this often use poster printing to advertise the festivities.

The free Chinese New Year celebration will take place Saturday, January 25, 2025 at the Cottonwood Heights City Hall, 2277 East Bengal Boulevard, from 10:00 am to noon. The art exhibit will be open weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm for the entire month of January.
