McKinney museum to celebrate moths

Butterflies are well known for their color and beauty, but a McKinney event is set to show that their lesser known cousins are just as fascinating.

Moths will be the stars of the show for two different activities planned for the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary. They will be on offer as part of National Moth Week, and general admission is included in the registration price.

The first function will be all about gardening in a way that attracts a variety of moths, and it is part of the larger series of Garden Talks. The second, which has been dubbed the “Magical Moth Night” will showcase the beauty of moths and other creatures active once the sun goes down. Participants will use special lights to help to draw these insects in for observation. Tickets for both activities start at $12 for adults and $9 for kids from ages 3 to 12. A discount will be available for Heard members.

A nature-based activity is likely to appeal to families, and many organizers order specially designed learning materials from local Stationery printers. These can be distributed to the attendees so they can continue to make discoveries even after a session has drawn to a close.

The Heard has made plans to offer both its Gardening for Moths talk and Magical Moths night for July 27, with the former starting at 5:30 pm and the latter at 8:00 pm. Its website offers more information.
