Downtown McKinney hosts a colorful pet parade
The Krewe of Barkus is returning to McKinney at the start of the year.
It is a colorful Mardi Gras dog parade that features costumed pets. The theme of the 24th annual event is ‘Dogs Going Overboard: Barkus Sails the Seven Seas’, and more than 300 participating dogs and owners are expected to attend.
There is no fee to walk in the parade, and organizers urge guests to arrive early. Owners are also encouraged to sign up their dogs for the event at a cost of $5 for the costume contest and float entry fee as soon as possible. The planners can therefore leverage poster printing at events like this to share registration details and parade routes.
Parking will be available in the city garages, with road closures beginning at noon. Dog owners will get to opportunity to parade the square, listen to music, and contest for ‘Best in Show’, ‘Most Creative’, ‘Best Group’, ‘Best Use of Theme’, and ‘Best Dog-Owner Combo’. There will also be more than 20 pet-related and general vendors for guests to explore. Animals in need of a home will be up for adoption during the parade.
Taking place on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Dr. Glenn Mitchell Memorial Park in Historic Downtown McKinney, the Krewe of Barkus celebration will start at 2:00 pm, with check-in at 12:30 pm.
