McKinney project developers get extensions from council

At a recent meeting, the McKinney City Council accepted a modification to a local project's development contract which included extensions to their timelines.

The extension gives the developers more time to secure more funding for the project and complete construction.

The deadlines for the initiation and completion of construction for the JW Marriott have been increased by 120 days. The amended document states that construction must now begin by April 30th, 2027, and be completed by August 31st, 2029. According to the original agreement made by councilmembers last June, construction was to begin by December 31st, 2026.

Officials on the council also confirmed that the McKinney Sunset Amphitheater, an arena created by Venu, is now anticipated to be completed in 2027, 12 months later than originally anticipated. Construction on the amphitheater began on June 13th, 2025.

According to a municipal document, the $300m Sunset Amphitheater project is anticipated to sustain over 1,300 jobs and produce over $3bn during the first 10 years of its launch. Up to 70 musical performances may take place annually at the amphitheater, which is currently anticipated to be open in time for 2027's touring season. Musicians on tour often use flyer printing to promote themselves.

The Sunset Amphitheater and The JW Marriott projects together highlight McKinney's ongoing development as a North Texas tourism, entertainment, and premium hospitality destination.
