The Marco Polo World Foundation will be presenting its 11th annual DFW Dragon Boat, Kite & Lantern Festival later in May.
This free one-day family-oriented event will be a celebration of Chinese culture through Dragon Boat racing, kite flying, making, demonstrations, contests and Chinese lantern displays. Over 20,000 attendees are expected.
Brightly painted boats measuring 40 x 4 feet will contain one team captain, a steer person, a drummer who will beat out the rowing cadence, and a crew of 20 paddlers. Each course will be 250 meters long.
Between the racing heats and the Grand Championship Race, there will be two costume contests. One will be the traditional costume parade and then the best Dragon drummer costume competition will begin.
The morning of the Kite and Lantern Festival will feature music performances by Vietnamese, Korea, Indian, African American, Chinese singers and dancers, and Martial Art & Tai Chi.
The afternoon entertainment will begin with the Dragon Boat Eye Dotting Ceremony. A Scholarship Award Ceremony will be followed by a Dragon Dance. The tradition costume parade will come next, and then a raffle draw. There are 23 more presentations after that and the festival will have closing remarks.

The festival will be May 20 from 8:30 until 6:00 pm on Lake Carolyn’s Las Colinas Urban Center. The first round of the Dragon Boat races will begin at 9:00 am.
