Seafood lovers keenly await shrimp festival

Local foodies will be flocking to the 13th annual Galveston Island Shrimp Festival coming toward the end of September.

The fun will begin on the Friday night at Saengerfest Park, 2302 Strand Street, with the Kick-Off Party at 7:00 pm. Over 800 guests will enjoy fried shrimp dinners, live entertainment, and an open bar.

On Saturday at 9:00 am, while more than 100 teams begin cooking their shrimp gumbo, runners will begin the Shrimp Scamper 5K Fun Run at Beerfoot Brewery on Seawall Boulevard. Registration will include participation medals and T-Shirts sporting this year’s festival graphic design.

At 9:30 am, the Kid Fish tournament will start at Pier 21. Vendors will open at 10:00 am, at which time the Ron Hoover Boat Show will start. The ticket booths will open at 11:00 am with the famous four-hour Gumbo Stroll beginning at noon. At this time, live music, Rum Punch Contest and the three-hour Strand Merchant Walk About will begin.

The Kid Fish awards ceremony will take place at 12:15 pm, and Galveston Shrimp Company’s Lil’ Shrimp Parade will begin at 3:00 pm.

The ceremony to crown this year’s Shrimp Gumbo kings will begin at 6:00 pm. Portions of the proceeds will go to the Resource Crisis Center of Galveston County and the UTMB Justin Hughes Fund.

The Galveston Island Shrimp Festival will be September 23 and 24 at 23rd and Strand Streets in the Historic Strand District.
