The Ohana Surf Dogs Invitational will be catching a wave in Galveston this July, aiming to support local animal welfare.
Ohana means family, and family includes dogs for many owners. Participants can sign up trained dogs to tackle the waves on a board and leash, or just wade in the water alongside their human companions. The competition will include multiple heats and the best dogs will receive awards, based on length of ride, technique, and confidence, with different categories for dogs above and below 25 pounds.
The competition is also a popular spectator attraction among lovers of cute animals.
The event area will also include vendors offering food and pet items. Those looking to purchase a treat for their pet (or human) are advised to bring a re-usable bag, as the event avoids single-use plastics. Vendors at pet events often offer themed Business Cards or promotional items to help connect with customers.
Proceeds from the Invitational will go towards the Galveston Island Humane Society, which provides adoption programs, spaying and neutering, and other services for animals. This will be the 13th edition of the annual competition, which is hosted in conjunction with Ohana Surf & Skate and other local sponsors.
The 2026 Ohana Surf Dogs Invitational will take place on the morning of July 18 at the beach across from Ohana Surf & Skate’s storefront.
